Hi.

I’m a writer and editor based in Madison, WI.

During my career, I’ve written hundreds of articles for publications including the New York Times, The Atlantic, INTERVIEW, Madison Magazine, and T: The New York Times Style Magazine, where I was previously an editor. My articles and essays have earned multiple regional and national honors and have been distinguished as notable in The Best American Essays and The Best American Science and Nature Writing.

I’m currently a Pulitzer Center StoryReach Midwest fellow. I also host Writing Forward, a podcast featuring conversations with writers connected to Wisconsin. Before settling in the Midwest, I worked with Ecotone and Lookout Books and taught publishing courses at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where I earned my MFA in fiction. I’m revising my first novel.

WHAT I COVER

I’m drawn to stories that reveal how people make meaning through communities, traditions, obsessions, performances, and the places they call home.

One month, I’m digging into school shooting drills; the next, I’m investigating prison book bans, legal weed, or the future of Alzheimer’s treatments. I’ve spooned with a professional cuddle therapist, shared a playground with Hollywood A-listers, and loitered on a street corner with one of the world’s top soccer players.

I’m especially interested in the gray areas: the tensions between belonging and isolation, nostalgia and progress, performance and authenticity, violence and vulnerability. I approach nonfiction with a fiction writer’s mindset — which is to say, I care deeply about characters and want to see them in motion.
